It can be hard living in such a small space like a camper van so we try and get out in the fresh air as much as possible to keep everyone entertained, including the rainy days. However, there are some days when it is not worth it and on these type of days, it is important to keep kids minds stimulated. These are our top tips.
🖍️Colouring
We try and use the mess free or water colours in our van so it does not make a mess and there are so many different colouring things you can chose from so pick something that your little one will love.
🧶Crafting
Get some basic craft gear and let your kids do some artwork or build some things.
🧸Toys
Let them play with their toys as when it’s nice they don’t have as much chance. We have a toy box packed full of things we brought from home as well as toys we picked up a long the way. Sometimes it is worth just pouring them out to play with.
🎥Movie
Let them watch a movie. Have a movie day in the van and get all cosy.
🧑🍳Prepare food
Let them help prepare dinner or make some treats. Our son loves helping prepare dinners by chopping/peeling and getting involved. You can also make some van life treats together.
📔Journal
Make a note of places they have been and what they have done. (This will probably be more enjoyed by older children)
🃏Cards
Play a family snap, pairs or other games that’s suitable for your children’s ages. There is an abundance of card games out there with varying difficulty to learn.
🎯Board games
Carry some of the travel board games as these can be enjoyed by the whole family.
✏️Learning
We are trying to teach our son some basics as he will be joining preschool in September and want him to learn a few things on our trip. We are trying to make this fun!
📱IPads
We believe it’s ok to let them have a go on their iPad or tablet from time to time. It Is also a handy tool to distract if it is needed.
🚘Drive
If you’re finished in an area use the rainy days to drive to another location so you don’t feel like you’re wasting the good weather driving.
🛝Soft play/trampoline park
Go and sit somewhere else warm and let them run wild and tire themselves out for an hour.
☔️SPLASH
If all else fails or you are feeling adventurous, let kids be kids and wrap them up in puddle suits and let them go splash in puddles. I know it’s hard to dry stuff in the van but they will have the BEST time.
