We come from an island which is full of stunning beaches and crystal clear water so it is quite hard to be impressed with beaches when we travel. On top of that Scotland never stood out to me as being somewhere with nice beaches. When I think of Scotland I think of green forests, flowing streams, lakes and mountains but some of the beaches we came across in Scotland were simply stunning. These are our top 5 from our recent trip.
Ceannabeinne Beach
What made this beach special for us was the ability to park in the car park overlooking it. You walk down a little bath across the road and onto the beach which has a stream coming to meet the sea and lots of areas to explore. We stayed here the night before visiting Smoo cave.
Calgary Beach
Known as Isle of Mull best beach for good reason. We donated to be able to stay overnight in the car park overlooking the bay which was beautiful. The beach was perfect white sand and crystal clear waters and we even managed a dip.
Fidden Beach
We stayed at Fidden farm which is amazing but the beach has such a remote feeling and crystal waters to swim or paddle in. There are lots of little coves to explore with sheep grazing on the beach edge.
Gairloch Beach
We came across this one by chance while stopping for lunch. They have motorhome services in the car park with hot showers and toilets as well. There is a lovely walkway down to the beach with information about local wildlife.
Durness Beach
Located next door to Smoo caves, this beach allowed us to burn some energy and explore with the kids. It has lots of rocks to climb and scramble and nice sand and big waves. There is also a little stream which comes onto the beach under an old bridge. Overall a great stop while on the NC500.
