We use Park4night as well as other apps to find most of our overnight stops. Too many times have we rocked up to our intended destination only for it to be a bit mediocre. Sometimes we do stay but most of the time we move to a better location which may have better views, more facilities (if any) or somewhere we just feel safer, which is important for us with young children. These are our top tips to find that perfect spot.
1 – Always have at least one back up
The more back ups the better. We normally mark a few different spots around the area so if we do turn up and want to move there is less stress. We can simply drive to the next location.
2 – Filter to higher ratings on the apps you use
This may seem self explanatory, but if other people have been scoring a spot highly, chances are it is for a reason. Yes they are more popular but that does not usually affect us as we get to our stops quite early compared to others.
3 – Try and find remoter areas when possible
A little bit of common sense never hurts. We try and stay away from towns and cities or areas we think might be disrespectful overnight and we try not to pull up in a lay- by etc. Finding remote areas keeps us out of the way so we do not annoy anyone and we always leave no trace. The remote areas usually provide the best views as well. Forestry car parks for example are usually out of the way and secluded.
4 – Drive by your intended site first to scope it out
If your intended site is on your route or if you have used point 1 then go check out your sites and then decide where you want to stay.
5 – Look for locations near waterfalls or streams
This is aimed at you wild swimmers and focused mainly in Scotland but the free overnight stops we have stayed at near streams or waterfalls usually have hidden little routes where you can get in the chilly water for a dip. A perfect thing to wake you up in the morning.
